I have so much to reveal I must know Nelson Woolsley. Ray was my school friend & The Nelsons who were descendants of Horatio kept the village post office where My poaching father & I provided them with trout from The Gader. Hence the name of Gader. Stein being German for stone. On the evacuees I remember them all. I had a crush on one Iris Galbaly? They came from Hackney. I lived at Chalk Row & my grandparents owned The Walnuts. Much Much more.

Hello, I'm currently conducting a university project which focuses on the dialect of Gooderstone in the 1950's using recordings and information from the Survey of English Dialects. The gentleman recorded is a Mr Jeffrey Shingfield (b. 1890#( the web address for the recording is http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=021M-C0908X0060XX-0600V1.xml# which may of interest to some of you!) I was just wondering if any local residents were able to shed a little more light on what village life in Gooderstone was like around the time that Mr Shingfield was alive and in contrast what village life is like today. Your website has already been a fantastic help, but a local resident's personal insight would be invaluable! Many thanks! Hi there. I have been doing some ancestry research and found that my great grandfather and his family all lived in Gooderstone. The King's were listed as living in the "Mill House" and before that on Chalk Row Lane maybe. He is listed as a Miller/Farmer. I was wondering if anyone had any information about the family or if their home is still standing

What a lovely site! I really enjoyed reading the historical entries about your village. My ancestors came to Australia from Gooderstone in 1852 (Bennetts). Thank you.

Jean Simms is wonderful. Came to stay with Donna over Thanksgiving - what a delight. Brings us English goodies. If all from Gooderstone are as the few I know - Must be a wonderful place to live.

I have been researching my fathers family tree for the past 5 years, his surname was Goodson, I have read on a few internet sights that this could be a variant of Gooderstone, I have traced his family back to about 1700 when they were in Wisbech St Peter, then moved to Terrington St Clements and then into Kings Lynn and then to Sutton Bridge. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Are there any records I could look at? Any responsse would be welcome.

In reply to the question about the cottages at the chalk pit, Gooderstone has two chalk pits. I suspect the one that is being discussed is the chalk pit owned by the parish council. There are two surviving cottages near it - obviously there are none in it. There is some evidence that there have prviously been two others in the area around the chalk pit.

I am researching my family history, and found your site. My great grandfather, James Frederick Manning, was born in Gooderstone in about 1862. In the 1871 and 1881 census he is recorded as living with his family at "Cottages in Chalk Pit, Gooderstone" I wondered whether these cottages still exist, and whether anyone in the village could help with knowledge of the Mannings in Gooderstone? There were a lot of them! Like your website. Every village should have one, both for current communications and to record the history of village life.

Can you mention the fantastic fish and chip van that parks up on The Street and Elm place every friday around 5pm and the fresh fish van that stops by the school on Weds from 1pm - 1.30. What a great service. I had no knowledge of this site until now. Maybe a little flyer in post boxes to market the website may help. You have provided a great resource. I love it.

Nicely set out web site, unfortunately not a lot on it yet, let's hope residents will come around to the idea of using it to inform others what is happening.

Having recently moved into the village, and having two young children, I am trying to find any activities open to them in the actual village other than travelling back into Swaffham. Is there anyone who does Horseriding lessons? Are there any clubs after school or during the holidays at the school or church? There is nothing I can find on the internet, and I am not sure if this is because there is not anything or it is just not advertised. kind Regards Lesley
